Gold IRAA walked-through gold IRA setup
About this company. Citadel Gold sells physical gold and silver and helps customers open and fund a precious metals IRA. The company lays out its process in four steps: a consultation, funding the account, choosing the metals, and shipping them to a depository.
Get the metal quote, the annual account fees, and the buyback terms in writing before you move any money.
Gold IRAIRA or direct delivery under one roof
Why it's here. Goldco handles both precious metals IRAs and straight purchases of gold and silver for home delivery. Decide which route you want first, then ask for the terms that apply to that specific account and those specific products.
Promotions tend to come with purchase-size or holding-period conditions, so ask for the complete written offer.
Direct purchasePrice-checking bullion between retailers
Why it's here. JM Bullion is an online bullion dealer. To compare it fairly against another retailer, use the exact same product, quantity, and payment method, and note the time of day since prices move with spot.
Read the delivery, return, and buyback policies for your exact order before you check out.
Gold IRAReading up before you commit
Why it's here. Augusta leans on education. Its site offers an information kit, explainer content, and product pages for gold and silver IRAs and outright purchases, which makes it a reasonable first stop if you're still learning how these accounts work.
Minimums, full fee schedules, and product availability aren't something we could verify, so confirm them directly.
Gold IRAWeighing your precious metals options
Why it's here. Birch Gold Group publishes material on precious metals retirement accounts and sells physical gold, silver, platinum, and palladium. Before you fund an account, confirm which products, which custodian, and which depository your plan would use.
Dealer premiums, custodian fees, and storage are billed by different parties and need to be added up together.
Gold IRAA second quote to check the first one
Why it's here. American Hartford Gold offers precious metals IRAs and direct purchases. It's a useful company to call for a competing itemized quote so you can see whether another dealer's price holds up.
We couldn't confirm current pricing, minimums, or buyback terms, so ask for all three in writing.
Direct purchaseBuying coins and bars online
Why it's here. APMEX is a large online bullion retailer with a wide catalog. Compare the delivered price of one specific product, since the final total shifts with your payment method, order size, and shipping choice.
The card-versus-wire price difference and shipping can change the total by more than you'd expect.

A gold IRA is a self-directed retirement account that holds physical metal instead of, or alongside, funds and stocks. The IRS sets purity rules for the coins and bars, requires an approved custodian to run the account, and requires an approved depository to hold the metal. Most people fund one by rolling over part of an existing IRA or 401(k). It suits someone who wants a tangible asset in their retirement mix and accepts that gold pays nothing while it sits there and can drop in price.
Ordering coins or bars from an online dealer puts the metal in your hands with no custodian, no depository, and no annual account fees. The trade-off is no tax advantage and full responsibility for storage and insurance. A gold IRA gives you tax-deferred or tax-free treatment inside the account's rules, in exchange for recurring fees, higher minimums, and distribution rules. Settle that choice first, then compare dealers within the lane you picked.
Walk away from anyone promising returns, forecasting economic collapse to rush you, pitching a 'home storage IRA', or refusing to put the exact product and total price in writing. Be suspicious when a call steers you from plain bullion toward high-premium 'exclusive' or collectible coins. The CFTC publishes advisories on precious metals fraud, and your state securities regulator and the Better Business Bureau keep complaint records you can check before you buy.
Get a written quote for the same coin or bar from two dealers on the same day. Make sure it includes the premium over spot, shipping, the custodian's fee, and storage. Spot is a reference number. Nobody sells at spot.
A gold IRA involves three separate businesses. The dealer sells you the metal. The custodian runs the retirement account. The depository stores the bars. Get a signed agreement from each one and know who to call when something goes wrong.
Have the dealer quote a buyback price at the same time as the purchase price. The gap between the two is your real cost of entry. A buyback program is a promise to make an offer, not a promise of a price, and gold pays no interest while you wait.
These weights set our research priorities for this category. We don’t publish a number for a company until we’ve verified enough to back it up.
See the full methodologyA gold IRA holds metal inside a tax-advantaged retirement account, which means a custodian, an approved depository, and yearly account fees. Buying outright means the coins or bars ship to you and there's no account to maintain, but no tax advantage either.
No. IRS rules require IRA metals to sit with an approved custodian at an approved depository. Taking possession yourself can be treated as a withdrawal, with taxes and penalties, no matter what a 'home storage' pitch says.
It depends on the product. Common bullion bars and coins carry lower premiums than collectible or 'exclusive' coins. The only way to know if a quote is fair is to price the identical product with a second dealer on the same day.
Ask for a direct, trustee-to-trustee transfer from your existing IRA or 401(k) into the new self-directed account. Money that passes through your hands has a 60-day deadline and possible withholding, so avoid that route unless a tax professional tells you otherwise.
It's a promise to make you an offer, not a promise of a price. Ask the dealer to quote today's buyback price next to today's purchase price. That gap is your real cost of entry, and it should be in writing before you fund anything.
Citadel Gold holds the first position in this comparison as a paid placement, which is disclosed on this page. Every other company is ordered by our research, and no position on the list is a score. Compare the written terms of any two companies before you pick one.
Company websites are where the product details start, not where our review ends. A company’s description of itself isn’t evidence of quality.
